** Vocabulary Help:

Variable - a letter or symbol representing a quantity (number)

i.e.           n + 3          \\ a number plus 3

Expression - an algebraic expression has many answers; it shows a pattern

i.e.           n + 6 shows the pattern of a number increased by 6

Equation - an algebraic equation HAS ONLY 1 ANSWER.

i.e.           n + 6 = 10            \\ n = 4

HOW DO YOU USE THAT... THAT.. WHA-AT DO YOU CALL THAT? ALGE-TILES?!

You have to know first what value each tile has:

Here's an example of how you use them (in diagrams):

And here's how you solve them in symbolic record:

Step 1: 2x + 6 = 12

Step 2: 2x + 6 - 6 = 12 - 6

            2x + 6 - 6 = 12 - 6

Step 3: 2x =  6

Step 4: x = 3

Verification:

2x + 6 = 12

2 (3) + 6 = 12

12 = 12     <--- This part is very important. You may lose a mark if you forget to put these.
