Algebra is a branch of mathematics in which symbols, usually letters of the alphabet, represent numbers or members of a specified set and are used to represent quantities and to express general relationships that hold for all members of the set

Keywords

Variable = a letter or symbol representing a quantity (number)

Expression= an algebraic expression has many answers

                 = it shows a pattern

                 = n = 6 shows pattern of a number increased by 6.

Equation = an algebraic equation HAS ONLY ONE ANSWER

              = n + 6 = 10     n=4

Situation Algebra

When you use substitution algebra, replace the variable with the value and solve.

Two Step Problem

Step 1: copy out expression

Step 2: substitute

Step 3: solve

Example(s)

a number +6 ---> n+6

3 times a number ---> 3x

3 more than a number ---> x+3

Word that means +, -, x, /

Alge Tiles

 = +n (positive variable)

 = +1 (positive integer)

= -n (negative variable)

  = -1 (negative integer)

 All equation solving is about balance

 Using Addition and Subtraction = Alge Tiles

Addition

1.)       x+2          =       5

2.)      x+2-2      =      5

3.)    x+2-2     =    5-2

Subtraction

Using Multiplication and Division

-Balance

-Isolate-Cancael using the opposite

-Balance

-Simplify

-Verify

Integer Rules

+2x+2 or 2(2)=4   (2 positive (+) signs= +)

-2x+2 or -2(2)=4   (1 negative (-) sign= -)

-2x-2 or -2(-2)=4   (2 negative (-) signs = +)

+2x-2 or +2(-2)=4   (1 negative (-) sign= -)

When you multiply or divide integers, count the negative signs.

Even amount of (-) signs gives a positive amount.

An odd amount of negative gives a negative. answer

Using Multiplication = Alge Tiles
