DEFINITIONS
Probability - is the measure of the likelihood of an event. Probability is shown using a fraction or a percent.
Possible Outcome - is a possible result of an experiment.
Event - is any possible outcome of an experiment.
Total Possible Outcomes - is the total possible results of an experiment.
-
e.g. You roll a 6-sided die. TPO are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.
Independent Event - is an event whose outcome do not influence each other.
Theoretical Probability - is what should happen during an experiment
Experimental Probability - is the number of times an event/outcome occurs during an experiment.
- e.g. During an experiment heads comes up more than tails.
SOLVING QUESTIONS
This is how i would answer a question involving probability.
Answer the question with this:
P = Probability
So you just put the number of outcome you want to get in the top and the total outcome that you cen get in the bottom.
e.g. What is the probability of you getting heads when you flip a coin?
1/2
1=PO(possible outcome)
2=TPO(total possible outcome)
Now you have to turn your answer into a percent. Just divide the numerator(top number) by the denominator(bottom number) and times it by 100.
Numerator / Denominator x 100 = Percent
For more information on percent go Percent.
QUESTIONS
A jar contains 25 purple, 17 brown, 23 red and 16 violet marbles. A marble is drawn at random. What is the probability of purple, violet or brown?
First find all the possible outcomes that you want:
Purple-- 25
Violet--- 16
Brown-- 17
PO------ 58
Second find the the total possible outcomes:
Purple-- 25
Brown-- 17
Red----- 23
Violet--- 16
TPO----- 81
Now you have 58/81
You are not done yet!
You still have to convert into percent:
58 / 81 = 0.7160 x 100 = 71.6%
P(purple, violet or brown) 58/81 or 71.6%
Questions:
-
Probability of getting even numbers when rolling a 6-sided die.
-
Probability of getting a number less than 5 when rolling a 6-sided die.
-
Probability of getting tails when flipping a coin.
Answers: highlight
-
2/6 = 1/2 = 50%
-
4/6 = 2/3 = 66.66%
-
1/2 = 50%
