Algebra :

the branch of mathematics that deals with general statements of relations, utilizing letters and other symbols to represent specific sets of numbers, values, vectors, etc., in the description of such relations.

Algebra is about BALANCE

STEPS FOR SUCCESS

  1. Isolate the variable

Key Words

Variable : a letter or  symbol that represents a number.

In the equation :  n + 3 = 10

n = varaible

Expression : n + 3 is an expression because there no = sign. This means n + 3 is a PATTERN with many answers.

Equation: n + 3 = 10 is an equation because "n" can be only 1 thing. The = sign, makes n + 3 = 10 and equation.

Recursive Patterns

a pattern that goes down the table is either x or y

Funtional Pattern

  • you say, I say pattern
  • what do you do to x to get y
  • creates an algebraic expression

Words that mean +-x/

bubbleshare errorPlugin error: That plugin is not available.

Using Subtraction & Addition

-9 = n+ 3

You can move an answer and = sign to the right of the equation.

5 = 3+2

      3+2=5

-9 = n+3 is the same as n+3 =-9

2n=6

dividing does not exist.

2n=6

2n/2=6/2

Questions

Write it in an algebraic expression.

3 times a number =

3 more than a number =

3 decreased by a number =

3 less than a number =

8 more than 3 times a number =

8 less than 3 times a number =

Area of a Circle :

The area of a circle is Pi x r2 or Pi x r x r, where r is the length of its radius.

Circumference of a Circle :

The distance around a circle. It is equal to Pi (Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket) times the diameter of the circle. Pi or Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket is a number that is approximately 3.14159.
