FRACTIONS ..
- They are part of a whole
- They have a numerator
- numerator is .. the top number of a fraction [ the part
- They have a denominator
- denominator is the bottom [ the whole
- They can be changed into different kinds of fractions
SUCH AS ..
- Mixed fractions can become improper
- Improper fractions can become mixed fractions
Before you start, you should know the what fraction is what .
YEAAA.. that doesnt make much sense coming from my mouth.. 8-)
But it means, knowing each fraction. What it does, and how you use it
HERE THEY ARE ..Equivalent fractionsImproper fractions
- - Two or more different fractions that equal the amount.
Equivalent fractions can also be reduced, and added, subtracted, or multiplied with eachother.
- - When the numerator is greater than the denominator
A improper fraction can be converted into a mixed fraction.
Mixed fractionsProper fractions
- - A whole number with a proper or improper fraction
A mixed fraction could be converted into an improper fraction. It can also be added, subtracted, or multiplied.
- -When the numerator is less than the denominator.
A proper fraction can be reduced. It could also be added, subtracted, or multiplied.
HERE'S A TIP ..
you should learn lowest common denominators ( LCD ) and common denominators .
Lowest Common Denominator - Having two or more fractions, and finding equivalents to add or subtract.
Take the equivalent that you found and you take the original numerator and put them together, to make a fraction.
Common Denominator - Having two or more fractions, and finding the lowest equivalent.
You then take the equivalent you found and take the original numerator and put them together, to make fraction.
Now, its easier to add or subtract.
- ADDING :For example :BUT ..For example :12, 1612, 15SUBTRACTING :For example :For example :24, 3224, 27MULTIPLYING :**
- Now . Adding is really simple
3/7 + 2/7 = ?
The question is more simple seeing as the denominators are the same, meaning you just leave the denominator as it is .
So the denominator will equal 7
All you need to do after is add the numerators .
3 + 2 = 5 = 5/7
Say the denominators are different.
1/4 + 2/3 = ?
First of all, you find a common multiple of the denominators. To make this easier, you can write it out
4, 8,
3, 6, 9,
Both of the denominators multiples are 12. So your denominator will equal 12.
And all you need to do after is simply add the numerators
1 + 2 = 3 = 3/12 = 1/4 < REDUCE / SIMPLIFY IF POSSIBLE :)
It's pretty much like adding. When you have the same denominators is SUPER easy.
7/12 - 4/12 = ?
Since its the same denominator, leave it.
Then just subtract the numerators.
7 - 4 = 3 = 3/12 = 1/4 < REDUUUUCE AGAIN :):)
And if the denominators are different you do what you did with adding..
7/8 - 1/3 = ?
First, you change the denominators..
8, 16,
3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21,
Since the common multiple is 24. 24 will be the denominator.
Now, all you need to do is subtract the numerators.
7 - 1 = 6 = 6/24 = 1/4
Multiplying is probably one of the easiest in fractions. All you really need to do is
